Indian Visa Photo Size — 2 x 2 Inches
The Indian e-visa and the paper visa both use a square photograph: 2 inches by 2 inches, 51 mm each way, on a plain white background. It is the same frame the United States uses, which catches people out — the Indian passport, by contrast, uses the rectangular 35x45 mm size.

How to get a 2x2 Indian visa photo
- Photograph the subject face-on against a plain white wall in even light.

Rules a crop cannot fix
- Full face, front view, eyes open, looking directly at the camera.
- The face must be centred and cover roughly 70-80% of the frame.
- Plain white or very light background with no border, no pattern and no shadow.
- No headwear covering the face; religious head coverings are allowed if the face is fully visible.
- Recent, in colour, sharp, with natural skin tones and no filters.
- The uploaded file has to be JPEG, at least 10 KB and no more than 1 MB.
Indian visa photo questions
No, and this is the most common mistake. The e-visa uses the 2x2 inch square; the Indian passport uses 35x45 mm. Pick the right document in the tool.
At 300 DPI, 2x2 inches is 600x600 pixels. The portal accepts a range, but it must be square and the file must stay between 10 KB and 1 MB.
White or very light. Plain is what matters — no gradient, no visible wall texture, no shadow cast behind the head.
Yes, if it is sharp, evenly lit and taken by someone else at eye level. Do not use a portrait-mode blur; the background must be genuinely plain, not artificially blurred.
Clear glasses with no glare and fully visible eyes are generally accepted, but removing them is safer given the portal offers no appeal on a rejected photo.
The OCI card application also asks for a 2x2 inch square photograph, though it adds a separate signature scan with its own dimensions.
