About Upside Down Text

Flipping text upside down is a small trick with a surprising number of uses: a joke reply people have to turn their phone to read, a puzzle or riddle whose answer is printed inverted, an unusual username, a hidden punchline in a caption, or an invitation with one line that reads the other way up. It works because the reader has to do something to decode it, which is exactly why it holds attention.
There is no rotation happening. Turning text upside down in a plain-text field means two separate steps, and both matter. First, every character is swapped for the Unicode character that looks like its inverted twin — a becomes ɐ (U+0250, Latin Small Letter Turned A), e becomes ǝ, and so on through the alphabet. Second, the whole string is reversed, because a genuinely upside-down line reads from what was its end. Miss the reversal and you get mirrored gibberish rather than readable inverted text; a lot of generators get this half right.
Coverage runs past the alphabet. All twenty-six letters have turned forms in both cases, the digits 0 to 9 are covered, and punctuation is handled properly rather than left alone: full stops rise to the top of the line, commas and apostrophes swap, question marks and exclamation marks become inverted, and every bracket, brace and angle bracket flips to its mirror so the pairs still match after the reversal. Letters with no turned counterpart in Unicode — H, I, N, O, S, X and Z, which are close to symmetrical anyway — stay as they are, which is what an actual rotation would produce.
The flip runs in both directions, which most generators do not offer. Paste text that is already upside down into the box and it comes back the right way up, because every substitution is registered as a two-way pair. That makes this useful for reading inverted text somebody sent you, not only for writing it — and it means you can check your own output by pasting it back in and confirming you get your original line.
Because the result is made of ordinary Unicode characters it pastes anywhere plain text is accepted: Instagram and TikTok captions and bios, Discord, WhatsApp, X, YouTube comments, game nicknames and document titles. As with the other styles on this site, screen readers announce these characters individually rather than reading words, and search engines do not match inverted text to the plain word — so it belongs in captions and nicknames rather than in anything that needs to be found or read aloud.
