Roman numerals are still in daily use in the places where a plain number would look wrong: clock faces, Super Bowl numbering, book chapters and prefaces, the copyright year at the end of a film, the regnal numbers of monarchs and popes, and a building's cornerstone. This page converts in both directions at once. Type a number in the left pane or a numeral in the right one, and the other side keeps up as you type.
Seven letters carry every value: I is 1, V is 5, X is 10, L is 50, C is 100, D is 500 and M is 1,000. A smaller letter placed before a larger one is subtracted from it, which is where IV for 4, IX for 9, XL for 40, XC for 90, CD for 400 and CM for 900 come from. The rule is narrower than most people remember: only I, X and C subtract, and only from the next two values above them. That is why 49 is XLIX and not IL, and why 99 is XCIX rather than IC.
Dates are the reason most people open a converter, and they are where converters usually break. Paste 10/11/2025 and this page reads it as three numbers rather than one, converting each group on its own and rejoining them with the separator you used: X/XI/MMXXV. Dots, slashes, hyphens and spaces all work, and it reads them back the same way, so XIV.VII.MCMXCII returns 14.7.1992 instead of one meaningless total. That is the difference that matters for a tattoo or an engraved ring.
The classic range is 1 to 3,999. M is the largest letter the Romans had and MMMM was not written, so 4,000 has no ordinary form. Above the limit the convention is the vinculum, an overline meaning multiply by a thousand: V with a bar is 5,000 and X with a bar is 10,000. This page writes that bar with a real combining overline, U+0305, so what you copy is text you can paste into a document rather than a picture, and it reads the overlined form back.
There is no zero. The Romans had no symbol for it, in a system built for recording amounts rather than calculating with them, so nothing you type as 0 has a numeral. Case is a convention rather than a rule: numerals are conventionally uppercase, while lowercase i, ii, iii numbers the front matter of a book, the preface and contents pages counted separately from the body. Either is accepted on input. One last convention: clock faces traditionally carry IIII at four o'clock rather than IV, balancing the VIII across the dial, though Big Ben is the well-known exception.

How do you write 2025 in Roman numerals?
MMXXV. Two Ms make 2,000, XX makes 20 and V makes 5, written in descending order and added up. 2024 is MMXXIV, where the IV at the end is a subtraction rather than four separate letters, and 2026 is MMXXVI. Type any year into the left pane and the numeral is built the same way, letter group by letter group.
How do I write my date of birth in Roman numerals?
Write it the way you normally would, with dots, slashes, hyphens or spaces between the parts, and each group is converted on its own: 07/03/1998 becomes VII/III/MCMXCVIII. The day, month and year keep the order and the separator you typed, because the page never joins them into a single number. It works in reverse too, so a numeral date you were sent can be read back.
Why is 49 not IL in Roman numerals?
Because only I, X and C are allowed to subtract, and only from the next two values up. I may stand before V and X, X before L and C, C before D and M. L, V and D never subtract at all. So 49 is not I before L; it is XL for 40 followed by IX for 9, written XLIX. By the same rule 99 is XCIX, not IC.
What is the highest number in Roman numerals?
In the ordinary letters, 3,999, written MMMCMXCIX. There is no letter above M and MMMM is not used, so the count stops there. Beyond it the vinculum takes over: a bar over a letter multiplies it by a thousand, so a barred V is 5,000, a barred X is 10,000 and a barred M is a million. This page writes and reads that overlined form.
Why do clocks use IIII instead of IV?
Balance, mostly. IIII on the right of the dial mirrors the weight of VIII on the left, and the four-symbol group sits better among the numerals around it than a two-letter IV. Casting is the other explanation often given: with IIII in place of IV, the twelve numerals need twenty I, four V and four X, which divides neatly into four identical molds. It is a decorative convention, not a numbering rule, so this page always writes 4 as IV.
