About Arabic Tashkeel

Arabic is normally written without its short vowels, and a reader restores them from context. When that context is missing — a learner, a text-to-speech voice, a name, a line of poetry, a children's book — the diacritics are what make the text readable: fatha, damma and kasra, sukun, shadda and the three tanween. This tool puts them on every letter automatically, in full or without the final case ending, and removes them just as fast.
The model is CATT, the Character-based Arabic Tashkeel Transformer published by Abjad AI in 2024 under the Apache 2.0 licence, running on our own server. It reads the whole sentence one character at a time and predicts the diacritic of every letter at once, so a paragraph takes a fraction of a second. On the authors' public benchmarks, run on 23 September 2026 with this exact engine, it got the diacritic of 95.3% of letters right on WikiNews and 91.2% on the harder CATT set.
On the same two benchmarks, with the outputs the benchmark authors published, Mishkal gets 15.3% and 16.5% of letters wrong, Sakhr 7.8% and 13.8%, and GPT-4 9.5% on CATT (GPT-4 does better on WikiNews, a public set older than its training data, so that score is not a fair comparison). Most remaining errors are on the last letter of a word, the grammatical case ending, because it depends on the syntax of the whole sentence. That is why there is a mode without case endings: it vocalises the stem of every word and leaves the ending bare, and the error rate on WikiNews falls from 4.7% to 2.6%.
Your text comes back exactly as you wrote it apart from the new marks: punctuation, numbers, English words, tatweel and line breaks are untouched, and any diacritic you already typed is kept, so you can fix a letter by hand and let the model fill in the rest. The result is shown in Amiri, a naskh typeface whose marks sit clear of the letters, and can be enlarged, copied or downloaded as a text file.
Removing tashkeel is the reverse job and runs entirely in your browser: every haraka, tanween, shadda, sukun, dagger alif and tatweel is stripped and nothing else changes. For the Quran, copy verses from a verified mushaf; automatic tashkeel is a draft for poetry, teaching material and everyday text, and a single wrong haraka can change a meaning.

How accurate is the tashkeel?

What does "without case endings" mean?
The last letter of each word is left bare, and everything before it is vocalised. Case endings depend on the grammar of the whole sentence and are where automatic tashkeel is least reliable (errors fall from 4.7% to 2.6% without them on WikiNews). It is the usual choice for teaching reading, for names and for texts read aloud, where the stem is what matters.
How do I remove tashkeel from Arabic text?

Can I use it for the Quran or for poetry?
For poetry and classical prose, as a first draft to check. For the Quran, no: the Quranic text has one fixed vocalisation, so copy verses from a verified mushaf rather than from any automatic tool. The model was trained on classical and modern Arabic and handles classical text well, but a single wrong haraka changes the meaning of a verse.
Is my text stored?
No. The text is vocalised by a model running on our own server and returned; it is not saved, logged or used for training. Removing tashkeel does not leave your browser at all.
