WebP does both jobs at a smaller size and is supported by every current browser, which makes it the better default for images on a website — though some older desktop software still will not open it.
One rule worth remembering: converting JPG to PNG does not restore quality. The detail a JPG discarded is gone, and the PNG simply preserves the flawed version at a larger file size. Conversion changes the container, not the contents. Always convert from the best original you still have rather than from a copy that has already been through compression.
Converting a transparent PNG to JPG has the opposite problem: the transparency has to become a colour, and that colour is white. If the image will sit on a dark background, compose it onto that background before converting rather than after.
