A watermark states what a document is before anyone reads a word of it. DRAFT stops a version being quoted as final, CONFIDENTIAL sets an expectation about forwarding, and a company name across a proposal makes an extracted page still traceable to you. You choose the text, its size, angle, opacity and colour, and it is applied across the centre of every page. The document underneath stays readable, which is the whole balance to strike.
The setting that decides whether a watermark helps or annoys is opacity. Too faint and it disappears when the page is printed in greyscale or screenshotted; too strong and it competes with the text and makes the document tiring to read. A diagonal mark at low opacity across the middle of the page is the convention because it survives cropping — a mark in a corner is simply cut off.
Watermark the copy, never the master. Keep an unmarked original, because removing a watermark cleanly afterwards is not something any tool does well. This is a one-way step in practice, so make it the last one before sending.
Worth being honest about what it does not do: a watermark discourages casual reuse and makes the source obvious, but it does not prevent copying, and someone determined can crop or edit around it. For information that genuinely must not leave, redact it; for a file that should not be opened at all, use a password.
