Two versions of a document rarely arrive as text you can paste. They arrive as files: contract-v1.docx and contract-v2.docx, last month's price list and this month's, a report exported to PDF before and after the review. So the comparison starts with the file itself — pick or drop a .docx, .pdf, .xlsx, .csv, .txt, .md, .json or any source file on either side and its text is pulled out and laid into the panel for you.
That extraction runs inside your browser. A .docx and an .xlsx are ZIP containers, so they are unpacked here; a PDF is read with the same engine your browser uses to display one. Nothing is uploaded, which matters more for this tool than for most: the documents people most often need to compare are contracts, payslips, offers and medical reports, and a comparison that requires sending both versions to a server is not one you can honestly run on those. One limit worth knowing: a PDF that is a scan holds pictures of pages and no text at all, so run it through OCR first.
Putting two versions of a text side by side and hunting for the differences is precisely the task people are worst at. A changed figure, a swapped date, an inserted "not" — the eye skims past them because it believes it already knows the sentence. A line-by-line comparison finds them immediately.
The result comes side by side, with the original on the left and the new version on the right, or as one unified list in which removed lines start with a minus and added lines with a plus — the same shape Copy Diff puts on your clipboard. Above it sit the counts of lines added, removed, modified and unchanged, and a similarity percentage: the share of lines identical in both, measured against the longer text. When only capitals or spacing differ, tick Ignore Case, Ignore Whitespace or Trim Lines before comparing, and those lines stop counting as changes.
The most serious everyday use is contract review. When the other side returns a "lightly adjusted" draft, comparing it against your last version is the only reliable check. In practice the meaningful edits are rarely in the headline clauses; they sit in notice periods, liability caps, termination rights and payment terms — short passages that read as boilerplate and are easy to skim.
Other cases that come up constantly: diffing two exports of a price or customer list to see what moved since last month; checking a translation against the approved source; confirming that what was published matches what was signed off; and, for students and researchers, seeing exactly which passages changed after feedback.
One practical tip about interpreting the result. Text copied out of a PDF usually carries line breaks in the middle of sentences, so whole paragraphs light up as changed when only the wrapping differs. Compare paragraph by paragraph in that case rather than pasting the whole document at once, and the output becomes far more useful.

Is there a limit on how much text I can compare?
Files can be up to 8 MB each, and a few thousand lines compare in a moment because the work happens in your browser. Past about 2,200 lines on each side, the tool switches to a quicker pass that pairs lines by position, so one inserted line can make the lines after it show as changed; for very long documents, compare a section at a time.
Can it ignore differences in spacing or capitalisation?
Yes. Tick Ignore Case to treat "Total" and "total" as the same line, Ignore Whitespace to treat runs of spaces and tabs as a single space, or Trim Lines to ignore spaces at the start and end of each line, then compare. The switches decide which lines count as changed; inside a changed line, the words are still compared exactly as typed.
Can I compare two strings, like two IDs or two lines of code?
Yes. Paste one string into each box and compare: if they differ, the line is marked as changed and the words that differ are highlighted. A word here is any run of characters between spaces, so in a string with no spaces, such as a hash, an ID or a URL, the whole string is highlighted rather than the one character that changed. If only capitals differ, tick Ignore Case.
