Removing a background is usually the step before everything else: a product shot that has to sit on the white of a store page, a logo that must work over any colour, a portrait for an email signature or a staff badge. With its original background attached, the image reads as a rectangular sticker pasted onto the layout instead of part of it.
The subject is detected and the background removed automatically, and what you get back is a PNG with real transparency — not a white background that looks transparent until you place it on a colour, but an alpha channel that lets whatever is underneath show through. Why PNG and not JPG: JPG has no transparency. Save a cut-out as JPG and the cleared area fills with white, putting you back where you started. That is by far the most common mistake at this step. If you need JPG for file size, place the subject on its final background first and export the composed image.
What works and what does not. Clean cut-outs come from clearly outlined subjects against a contrasting background: products, clothing on a form, vehicles, half-length portraits. Loose or curly hair, lace and mesh, glass and smoke, and any subject the same colour as what is behind it are all harder — check the edge on those, and if it matters, reshoot against a stronger contrast.
One piece of advice improves results more than any setting: photograph against a smooth background in a clearly different colour from the subject, with soft light and no hard shadow pressed against the outline. White card and window light are enough. Automatic cut-outs fail mainly where the subject's edge disappears into the background.
