The failure this prevents is specific and common: you format a CV or a contract, it looks right on your screen, and it arrives at the other end with the page breaks in different places and a font you never chose. Word lays out its pages using the fonts and printer settings of whatever machine opens the file, so the same document genuinely is a different document on someone else's computer.
