Morse code has outlived every technology it was built for and is still in use: amateur radio operators send it daily, aviation beacons identify themselves with it, it appears constantly in puzzle games and escape rooms, and it remains a genuinely practical way to signal when nothing else works. This page translates in both directions at once — type English on one side or Morse on the other, and the opposite box keeps up.

The code implemented here is ITU-R M.1677-1, the international standard: the twenty-six letters, the ten digits, and the punctuation that is actually transmitted — full stop, comma, question mark, apostrophe, exclamation, slash, brackets, ampersand, colon, semicolon, equals, plus, hyphen, underscore, quotation mark, dollar and at. The complete table is printed below the converter, so the page answers "what is the Morse alphabet" as well as converting for you.

Timing is what separates written Morse from Morse anyone can actually receive, and it is fixed by ratios rather than by speed. A dash is three times the length of a dot. The gap between the parts of one letter is one dot long, the gap between letters is three, and the gap between words is seven. In writing, this page follows the usual convention: a space between letters and a forward slash between words. Speed up or slow down as much as you like — as long as those ratios hold, the message stays readable.

Decoding accepts the Morse people paste rather than only the Morse this page produces, which is the difference between a translator that works and one that returns an empty box for input that looks perfectly correct. Typographic dashes inserted by an editor's autocorrect are normalised back to hyphens, middots and bullets are read as dots, and word breaks are recognised whether they were written as a slash, a vertical bar, a line break or a double space.

SOS is worth a note because it is almost always written wrongly. It is ... --- ..., and it is not three separate letters: it was chosen as a single unbroken nine-element signal precisely because it is unmistakable and easy to send under pressure. It stands for nothing — not "save our souls", which was attached to it afterwards.
