Superscript and Subscript Generator
Raise or lower text into small characters you can paste anywhere, including fields with no formatting button: exponents, footnote marks and chemical formulas.
Raised and lowered text
Superscript sits above the line, subscript below it, small caps stay level. Each is a real Unicode character, so it survives a paste. Tap one to copy it.
Every other style
The same text in every style Confileo generates. Tap any one to copy it — they all paste the same way.

About Superscript & Subscript Generator
Confileo's Superscript & Subscript Generator tool raises or lowers your text into small superscript and subscript characters you can copy and paste. Everything runs in your browser, free and without signup, and your files are deleted automatically after processing.
Superscript and subscript are trivial in a word processor and impossible almost everywhere else. A tweet, an Instagram bio, a Discord message, a spreadsheet cell, a filename, a browser tab title, a YouTube description, a game nickname — none of them have a formatting button, and all of them take plain text. This page closes that gap by giving you characters that are already drawn raised or lowered, so they carry their own formatting wherever they go.
That is the important distinction. Word's superscript button does not change the letter; it changes how the document draws it, and the formatting is a property of the document rather than of the text. Copy it into a plain field and it lands flat. The characters here are different characters — a raised two is its own codepoint, not a two with an instruction attached — so nothing can strip the formatting off, because there is no formatting to strip.
Coverage is uneven, and it is better to know why than to be surprised by it. Superscript has every letter and every digit. Subscript does not: Unicode never assigned a subscript b, c, d, f, g, q, w, y or z. The block was built for mathematics and phonetic notation, where those letters were not needed, and once a standard is published the gaps stay. Letters with no subscript form pass through unchanged here rather than being silently swapped for something that only looks close, because a formula with one wrong character is worse than a formula with one plain one. All ten digits exist in both directions, which is what most uses actually need.
Chemistry is the common case for subscript, and it works cleanly because formulas are mostly digits: H₂O, CO₂ and C₆H₁₂O₆ paste correctly into a message, a slide title, a filename or a spreadsheet header with no formatting available. Superscript's common cases are exponents, footnote markers, ordinal endings, the degree-adjacent notation in units, and trademark or reference marks in a profile line.
Two limits worth stating plainly. These characters are read, not computed: a superscript two is not an exponent operator, so a spreadsheet cell containing one is text and will not calculate. Use the caret for arithmetic and keep these for labels and headings. And in a document that has real superscript formatting available, prefer the built-in one — it stays typographically correct if the font changes, while a substituted character is stuck at whatever size and weight the font drew it.
Small caps sits alongside the two on this page because it answers a neighbouring question. It keeps every letter on the baseline at reduced height, which is what people usually want when they say they need smaller text for a bio line or a subtitle and do not actually need it raised or lowered at all.

Superscript & Subscript Generator — Frequently asked questions
Why use these instead of the formatting button?
Because most places have no formatting button. A tweet, an Instagram bio, a Discord message, a spreadsheet cell, a filename, a browser tab title and a game nickname all take plain text only. These characters are ordinary text that happens to be drawn raised or lowered, so they survive anywhere text does.
Are all the letters available?
Superscript covers every letter and digit. Subscript does not: Unicode never assigned a subscript b, c, d, f, g, q, w, y or z, because the block was built for mathematics and phonetics rather than for writing words. Letters with no subscript form are passed through unchanged, which is the honest result. All ten digits exist in both.
Can I write chemical formulas with this?
Yes, and it is the most common reason people need subscript. H2O, CO2 and C6H12O6 all use digits, which are fully covered, so the formula pastes correctly into a message, a filename or a slide title with no formatting.
Will exponents still calculate in Excel?
No. A superscript 2 is a character, not an operator, so a cell containing it is text. Use the caret for arithmetic and keep these characters for labels, headings and anywhere the number only has to be read.
Do these work in a footnote?
They work as footnote markers in any plain-text context, and the raised digits are exactly the characters used for that. In a word processor that has real superscript formatting, prefer the built-in one, because it stays correct if the document font changes.
Is this tool really free?
Yes. Every Confileo tool is free to use with no daily caps, no watermark on your output and no credit card required.
Do I need to create an account?
No. You can use the tool straight away without signing up or logging in.
Are my files safe and private?
Yes. Your files are processed for the task you requested and then deleted automatically — they are never shared or kept.
Does it work on my phone?
Yes. The tool runs in any modern browser, so it works the same on desktop, tablet and mobile with nothing to install.
