Cropping and resizing get confused constantly, and choosing wrong wastes time. Cropping cuts pixels away at the edges and changes what is in the frame. Resizing keeps the whole picture and changes how many pixels describe it. If a platform complains the shape is wrong, you need to crop; if it complains the file or the dimensions are too large, you need to resize.

Crop for the subject, not just for the frame. Leave a little space above a person's head rather than cutting at the hairline, keep the eyes roughly a third of the way down, and for a product shot leave an even margin on all sides so it does not look wedged into the corner. A technically correct crop that clips someone's chin still reads as a mistake.

Cropping does not re-compress the part you keep, so there is no quality loss on the remaining pixels. What it does cost is resolution: a small crop from a large photo is a smaller image. If you crop tightly and then need a large final size, you are enlarging, and enlarging is where images go soft — start from the biggest original you have.

PNG transparency survives the crop, which matters for logos and cut-out graphics where a crop that fills the background with white ruins the file. JPG, PNG and WebP are all supported and the download keeps its original format.
