Splitting is what you reach for when a document has to become several, and the reason is nearly always that someone else set a limit: a portal that accepts one file per category, an email server that rejects anything over 10 MB, a printer with a page cap, or a client who should receive their section of a report and not the other four.
You choose where the document divides — a page range, individual pages, or every page as its own file — and download the results. Nothing is installed and the original stays untouched on your device.
Two habits make split files usable at the other end. Name them so they sort correctly and describe themselves: contract-part-01, contract-part-02 rather than document(1) and document(2). And overlap nothing — if a section runs from page 12 to 20, the next should start at 21, because duplicated pages across parts are how a reviewer ends up reading the same clause twice and missing the one between them.
Splitting does not re-compress anything, so each part keeps the exact quality of the original. It also means the parts together are usually slightly larger than the source, since every PDF carries its own structural overhead. If you are splitting specifically to get under a size limit and the parts are still too big, compress them afterwards rather than splitting further.
A point that catches people out: a password-protected PDF cannot be split until the protection is removed, and a split file does not inherit the original's password. If the content was sensitive enough to protect, re-protect the parts before sending them.
