Zalgo text is the writing that looks possessed — letters buried under a growth of marks that climbs above the line and drips below it. It spread from a 2004 web comic about a corrupting entity, and the name stuck to the effect rather than the character. What people usually want it for is smaller than the mythology: a username that catches the eye in a player list, a Discord message that looks like the channel is breaking, a video title that stands out in a row of thumbnails, a Halloween post. The mechanism is a quirk of Unicode rather than a font. Combining marks are characters with no width of their own: they attach to whatever letter precedes them and are drawn on top of it. That is how an e becomes é in text that has no accented-e character available. Unicode never set a limit on how many marks may attach to one letter, because there was no reason to — no natural writing system stacks more than two or three. Stack thirty and the renderer keeps obeying, drawing them upward and downward until the glyph overruns the lines around it. Nothing is broken; the standard is simply being taken at its word.
Because it is text and not an image, it goes wherever text goes: usernames, bios, chat, captions, filenames, spreadsheet cells. Two things to know before you paste. Some platforms cap how many marks they draw per character, so heavy zalgo arrives looking lighter — Instagram and X both clamp the vertical overflow so a post cannot cover its neighbours. And some services reject usernames containing combining marks outright. Light intensity passes almost everywhere heavy is refused, which is the practical reason to compare the two rather than reaching straight for the strongest.
The marks here are placed by a seeded generator, not a random one. That sounds like a detail and is not: with real randomness the text would re-scramble on every keystroke, crawling as you typed, and the string you copied would not be the one you had been looking at. A screen reader reaches every mark in the string and will try to announce them, so a heavily zalgo'd sentence can be unusable to someone who listens to their feed. Search engines and search boxes have the same problem in a milder form: the letters are still there underneath, but a search for the plain word will not match the decorated one.
Removing it is the other half of the job.
