Crossing out text is easy in a word processor and impossible almost everywhere else. Instagram and TikTok bios, Discord and WhatsApp messages, X posts, LinkedIn headlines, YouTube comments, Google Docs comment boxes, most forums and every plain-text form field have no strikethrough button, and formatting pasted in from elsewhere is stripped on the way. That is the gap this page fills — a struck-through price, a crossed-out word in a joke, a completed item on a list.
The method is different from the other styles on this site, and it is worth understanding because it explains why this one works nearly everywhere. Bold and cursive replace your letters with different Unicode characters. Strikethrough does not: your letters stay exactly as they are, and a combining long stroke overlay (U+0336) is inserted after each one. The font draws that stroke through the character it follows. Since the underlying letters are untouched, the text stays searchable and readable to a screen reader in a way the substituted styles are not.
Four line styles are generated from the same box. Strikethrough draws through the middle. Underline (U+0332) sits below, and is the one to use where an app has no underline control either. Slashed (U+0338) puts a diagonal through each character rather than a horizontal bar. Overline (U+0305) draws above, which is what you want for mathematical notation or a deliberately archaic look.
Spaces are deliberately left unstruck. Striking them too produces a single unbroken bar across the whole line, which is a different effect and usually not the one people want — it hides the word boundaries and makes the text much harder to read. Leaving the gaps clear keeps each word individually crossed out, which is what a pen through a line looks like.
One rendering caveat: because the stroke is drawn by the font rather than being part of the letter, its exact position varies slightly between platforms, and a very small number of older apps ignore combining marks entirely and show the letters unstruck.
