Nobody actually wants three paragraphs of lorem ipsum. They want a block that fills a card, a caption of about 200 words, or an abstract that fits in 500 characters — and a paragraph count is only a guess at those. The classic opening paragraph, from "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit" to "id est laborum", is exactly 69 words and 445 characters — 377 without spaces — in four sentences. Rule of thumb: one paragraph is about 70 words or 450 characters, so 200 words is roughly three paragraphs. The "start with Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet" switch reproduces that paragraph verbatim, comma after amet included. Later paragraphs use the standard lipsum vocabulary of roughly 180 words, in sentences of four to eighteen words.
HTML mode wraps each paragraph in a <p> tag, and list mode gives a <ul> with one <li> per item — what a lorem ipsum HTML generator is usually asked for and what most hide behind a checkbox. The counts exclude the tags. Copy puts the markup on the clipboard as plain text, so it pastes into a template or CMS field without becoming rich text. The text is cut from Cicero's De finibus bonorum et malorum (45 BC), 1.10.32–33: "Neque porro quisquam est qui dolorem ipsum quia dolor sit amet, consectetur, adipisci velit" — nor is there anyone who loves pain itself because it is pain, in Rackham's 1914 translation. "Lorem" is the tail of dolorem sliced mid-word; "adipiscing" is not a form Cicero wrote. Richard McClintock traced it in 1982 by looking up consectetur. The scrambling is the point: readable prose pulls the eye to its meaning, and a reviewer who is reading the copy has stopped looking at the layout.
