Every file carries more than what you can see in it. A document records who created it and with which program, a photograph often records the camera, the exact time and sometimes the coordinates where it was taken, and a PDF can keep the path of the folder it was saved from. None of this appears on the page, and all of it travels with the file when you send it.
You upload a file and see what is actually stored inside it: format, size, creation and modification times, the producing software, and the embedded metadata fields. Nothing is installed and the file itself is not changed.
The most common reason people look is privacy before sharing. A photo posted publicly can carry the location it was taken; a document sent to a client can carry the name of the person who really wrote it, or a filename revealing another client. Neither is visible on screen, which is exactly why it survives review — nobody sees what they are not shown.
The second reason is verification. Creation and modification timestamps, along with the producing application, are the quickest way to sanity-check whether a file is what it claims to be. A contract said to have been signed last year but produced by software released this year is worth a second look, and a scanned invoice whose metadata names a photo editor deserves a question.
There is also a practical diagnostic use. When a PDF will not open, prints wrongly or refuses to be edited, the answer is usually recorded in the file — an unusual producer, an encryption flag, a version older than the reader expects. Reading the metadata turns guesswork into a specific cause in seconds.
If you find something that should not be shared, inspecting alone does not remove it: metadata lives outside the page content, so redacting the text will not touch it. Strip or re-export the file before sending. Your file is deleted from the server after processing.
