Australian Passport Photo Size — 35 x 45 mm
The Australian Passport Office uses the international 35 mm by 45 mm frame with the head between 32 mm and 36 mm from chin to crown. The measurements match the European standard, so a photo that satisfies Australia will usually satisfy a Schengen application as well.

How to get a 35x45mm Australian passport photo

Rules a crop cannot fix
- Taken within the last six months, in colour, sharp and correctly exposed.
- Neutral expression with the mouth closed; a slight smile is tolerated, teeth are not.
- Eyes open, looking at the camera, with no hair across them.
- Glasses should be removed. They are only accepted with a medical reason and no glare on the lenses.
- Head coverings only for religious reasons, with the face fully visible.
- Plain light background giving clear contrast — no patterns, no shadows, no other people.
Australian passport photo questions
Two identical prints, and one of them must be endorsed on the back by your guarantor. The tool produces a sheet with several copies to cut from.
The Passport Office asks you to remove them. They are accepted only where there is a medical reason, and even then the eyes must be clearly visible with no reflection.
The dimensions match at 35x45 mm, but the two authorities apply their own rules on background and expression. Use the New Zealand setting in the tool if that is the application.
At 300 DPI, 35x45 mm is 413x531 pixels. Start from the largest original you have so the downscale stays sharp.
No hands, no supporting arms and nobody else in the frame. For infants, a plain sheet laid flat with the child on their back is the usual way to get an even background.
