UK Passport Photo Size — 35 x 45 mm
HM Passport Office wants 35 mm wide by 45 mm tall, with the head measuring between 29 mm and 34 mm from the bottom of the chin to the crown. That head band is narrower than most countries use, and it is where British applications usually fail — a photo cropped to the right rectangle can still be rejected for a head 2 mm too large.

How to get a 35x45mm UK passport photo

Rules a crop cannot fix
- Taken within the last month, in clear focus and in colour.
- Plain expression, mouth closed, eyes open and clearly visible.
- Nothing covering the face. Glasses are allowed only if your eyes are not obscured by frames, glare or tint.
- No head covering unless worn for religious or medical reasons — the face must be visible from the bottom of the chin to the top of the forehead.
- Plain cream or light grey background, evenly lit, with no objects and no other people in the frame.
- A digital photo submitted online must be at least 750 x 1000 pixels and under 10 MB.
UK passport photo questions
At 300 DPI, 35x45 mm is 413x531 pixels. HM Passport Office asks for at least 750x1000 pixels for a digital submission, so upload the largest original you have and let the tool scale it.
