Canada Passport Photo Size — 50 x 70 mm
Canada uses a photo nobody else does: 50 mm wide by 70 mm tall. It is larger than the European 35x45 and taller than the American square, which means a photo made for any other country will not pass, and a photo booth abroad will usually get it wrong.

How to get a 50x70mm Canadian passport photo
- Take the photo face-on in even light against a plain white or light wall.
- Upload it below — "Canada — Passport" is preselected.
- The tool crops to 50x70 mm with the face scaled into the 31-36 mm band.
- Print two copies. Have the studio or print shop write their name, address and the date on the back of one.
Rules a crop cannot fix
- Taken within the last six months.
- Neutral expression, mouth closed, eyes open and looking straight ahead.
- Glasses are allowed if the eyes and eyebrows are clearly visible with no glare, but IRCC recommends removing them.
- Head coverings only for religious reasons, with the full face visible.
- Plain white or light-coloured background with a clear contrast to the face.
- The photographer must print their name, the studio address and the date on the back of one copy — a rule unique to Canada, and not something any online tool can do for you.
Canada passport photo questions
IRCC has kept 50x70 mm rather than adopting the ICAO 35x45 default. It is a genuinely different frame, so a European or American photo cannot simply be reprinted at a new size.
The image can be taken anywhere, but IRCC requires the photographer's name, address and the date on the back of one printed copy. A commercial print shop will do this; a home printer cannot satisfy it on its own.
At 300 DPI, 50x70 mm is 591x827 pixels. The tool outputs at that resolution so the print is sharp at actual size.
The PR card and citizenship applications use the same 50x70 mm photo, though the number of copies and the endorsement wording differ by form.
